How Much of Your Life is Habit?

I heard someone ask, “how much of your life is habit?” When I think of a habit I think of things like cigarette smoking or nail biting. This person made me think, “How much of my life is habit?”. How much of my time do I spend doing things without even thinking or, more importantly, being present and aware of what I am doing?

An example is feeding my dogs. I do it on auto pilot sometimes and forget how important it is to them that I do it and how fun it is for me to watch them eat. How much am I missing when I do things out of habit instead of with purpose? If I have a crisis come up, do I handle it out of habit because that worked before, when I should really be seeing each situation for what it is and deciding in the present how to handle it? When I thought about this for myself, I really did not like seeing how much I do out of habit. Now, I plan on changing to being present. Want to join me?
